Can an app replace a real estate photographer?

Best for

  • Condos, apartments, starter homes and rentals
  • Agents who shoot on a phone

Not for

  • Acreage or view homes that need drone work: hire a photographer
  • Luxury twilight shots and 3D tours

How it works

  1. Shoot the room in the app, or pick photos from your phone.
  2. Pick Enhance, Declutter or Stage. Each result takes 20 to 60 seconds.
  3. Compare it with the original and save it. Staged files come labeled.

For an ordinary condo or starter home, a phone and an AI editing app can replace a real estate photographer. For luxury homes, big lots or views, it can't. You'll also need a photographer for drone work, twilight photos or a 3D tour. Thumbtack puts the average shoot at about $286 a property. Editing 25 phone photos in Real Estate Camera costs about $8 to $13 in credits.

Prices come from Thumbtack and the photographers' pages linked in our cost by city guide, checked on 24 October 2026. Real Estate Camera is our app. I'm not neutral. Weigh my recommendation with that in mind.

Shoot it yourself or hire?

My call: a phone and an app cover condos, apartments, starter homes on small lots and rentals. Hire a photographer for acreage or a view that needs drone work. I'd also hire one for a luxury listing, where twilight helps, or a builder who needs a 3D tour. Thumbtack puts the average shoot at about $286.

How to shoot a listing on a phone

For a phone listing shoot, light every room and shoot from a corner with the 0.5x lens at light-switch height. Keep the phone level so walls stay straight. Afterwards, run Enhance in Real Estate Camera on batches of up to 40 photos, at 1 credit each. Declutter or stage rooms that need it, and label the staged images.

  1. Turn on every light and open the blinds.
  2. Use the 0.5x lens from a corner, holding the phone at about light-switch height.
  3. Keep the phone level so the walls stay straight.
  4. Run Enhance on every photo, in batches of up to 40.
  5. Declutter or stage rooms that need it. Label the staged ones.

For rooms and angles, use the real estate photo shot list. Phone settings are in real estate photos on an iPhone.

Where a photographer earns the fee

A photographer earns the fee through composition and equipment: a drone for aerials, real twilight shots at dusk and 3D tour capture. On the pages checked, those add-ons cost $99 to $300 each. See what an app still misses for each service. A good photographer also knows which rooms to skip.

Questions

Can I use phone photos for an MLS listing?

Yes, if they meet your MLS's size and accuracy rules. Keep the phone level and every light on. Fix exposure afterwards, and label any staged photos.

How much do I save by shooting myself?

Thumbtack's national average is about $286 a property. Enhancing 25 photos in Real Estate Camera costs about $8 to $13 in credits.

When should I hire a photographer anyway?

Hire for luxury listings or homes where the view or lot sells the house. You'll also need a photographer for drone work, real twilight photos, video or a 3D tour.

Do buyers notice phone photos?

Bad ones, yes. Dark rooms and tilted walls stand out. So does clutter. Those are problems an editing app fixes, but fake skies and over-edited rooms stand out too. Keep edits honest.

Is it fair to photographers to say this?

An app takes the ordinary listings. Photographers still do work an app can't. On high-end homes, their eye is worth paying for.
